There were some awesome things in this Psalm of David. The first thing that jumped out at me came in verse 3.
Psalm 37:3 Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
What really got me about this verse is that it’s not saying to be faithful, it’s saying to “befriend faithfulness.” I want to look at this for a minute. First of all, what does it mean to be faithful? The definition of the word is long and full of inspiration. To be faithful is to be strict or thorough in the performance of duty, to be true to one’s word, to be steady in allegiance or affection, to be reliable, to be trusted, to adhere to fact. If I can live up to that definition then I think I’ll be doing pretty good in life.
But what really gets me is the call to befriend faithfulness. Don’t just be faithful, be a friend to it. As I considered this, it occurred to me that we delight in our friends. We want to be around our friends. So in a way this verse is telling us to delight in the act of being faithful, to desire faithfulness. I think that’s a beautiful sentiment and an important call for us as believers.

These next two verses are a great comfort to me. I read them at a time when I really needed this encouragement, too.
Psalm 37:23-24 The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; 24 though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.
What a comfort it is to know that even when I stumble, God’s got me. Even when I stumble, when I have an off moment or an off day, God’s got me by the hand. He’s not going to stand by and watch me tumble into the abyss. Even now as I’m writing this I just feel such a wave of love from the Lord all over me. He has us, even when we fall. Like the good father that He is, He holds us by the hand and helps us up, keeps us from further harm, and gets us back going on our way again.

I’m starting to think that my true mission from God is to encourage people to read the Bible. Verses like these next two are always jumping out at me.
Psalm 37:30-31 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice. 31 The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.
Particularly, it’s verse 31 that I want to talk about here. The law of God is knowable to me and you by reading the Bible. In this description of a righteous person, it says that the law of God is in their heart. Here’s my question. How can the law of God be in my heart if I’m not studying the word of God? How can the law of God be in my heart if I don’t even know what the law is in the first place?
I really love how The Message interpretation words this particular verse.
Psalm 37:30-31 (The Message) Righteous chews on wisdom like a dog on a bone, rolls virtue around on his tongue. His heart pumps God’s Word like blood through his veins; his feet are as sure as a cat’s.
Every time I read it I get hyped up. God’s word should be like blood, flowing through our veins. Blood is essential to life, without it we are dead in an instant. God’s word is essential to life. I say it all the time, and I’m sure if you regularly read this blog you probably get tired of hearing it, but I simply can’t stress it enough. We have to be spending time in the Bible. It’s such a vital part of who we are as believers, such a vital key to our well being and our growth in Christ.
PRAYER AND CLOSING
Father God, you know I delight in my friends. There are few things I love more than being among friends, laughing and talking. You are my friend, also, Lord, and today I ask that you help me to also befriend faithfulness. I don’t just want this to be a great thing I read in the Bible, I want it to be a truth in my life. Let me delight in faithfulness, let me seek it out, let it be one of the great joys of who I am. I also ask that you make the Bible as a friend to us. Because it is vital, like blood in our veins. Establish a delight in your people for your word, make reading the Bible a favored part of their day. I pray that you diminish other desires in us, and build up our desire for your word. Let the appeal of television, of the internet, of videogames, of other books, let it all fade in comparison to spending time in your word. Change our hearts Lord, so that we may first delight in the things that are of you. The other verse I looked at today, God, I just thank you so much for it. You establish my steps. My path this day is laid out before me by you, and I pray right now for the wisdom and strength to walk that path. God, I never want to stumble again, but even as I say that I know that I will. So I thank you that this psalm addresses that, and tells me that if I stumble, you’ve got me, that you won’t let me fall. While I’d rather never stumble at all, what a comfort it is to know that if I do it’s not my undoing, that you are there with me, holding my hand. You are my balance, Lord, you are my guide. The king who takes time to lead each servant with love. I love you, God, and on this day I am just so surrounded by calm. I woke up with that spirit of just calm and peace. Reside in this home always, Lord, with your spirit of peace and love. We delight in you, our friend and savior, our king and creator. Thank you for all that you are, and all that you’ve given me. Thank you for the trials and the tough times, for they’ve shaped me into who I am today. I draw my strength from knowing that with you, I’ve overcome tough things. I fear no challenge or situation, I welcome any obstacle because I know that with you it shall be overcome. Thank you for the confidence to live my life with head held high. I pray right now that you establish that confidence in any of your people who don’t have it today, Lord. Build them up, today, help them see their identity in you. I pray all of these things in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
